Entry

You are obliged to be able to always identify yourself with your passport or identity card.

Safety

There may be demonstrations and riots in all major cities due to domestic political tensions and in connection with the armed conflicts in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory (especially Gaza). The armed conflicts in the neighbouring countries of Syria and Iraq may have a short-term impact on the security situation, particularly in the border areas. Follow the instructions of the local security forces.

The crime rate is at a relatively low level. Pickpocketing and occasional robberies and aggression occur, especially in Istanbul. There is a particular risk in crowded places such as airports, railway stations, underground stations and open markets.

Currency and means of payment

In Türkiye you pay in Turkish lira (TRY) and you often pay in cash. But in many places, you can also pay by card.

Tip

In Türkiye, it is generally customary to give a tip. It is seen as a sign of thanks and appreciation for a service rendered. The amount of the tip depends on the type of service, the situation and local customs.

Transport and infrastructure

Türkiye has a well-developed road network. Traffic is lively, especially in the cities, and often leads to accidents.

Clothing

Türkiye is a Muslim country, so tourists should dress respectfully. Women, in particular, are expected to wear long, airy dresses rather than short ones. Shoes are to be removed before entering a mosque. Women should cover their heads with a scarf or shawl.

Risk due to nature

Large parts of Türkiye are located in an earthquake zone. It cannot be ruled out that earthquakes or volcanic eruptions in the Mediterranean region could trigger tsunamis that could reach all coastal areas of the Mediterranean. In summer, there is a risk of forest fires, especially in the south of the country.

Medical care

In general, medical care is good. Outside the cities, however, it is only limitedly guaranteed. In emergencies, all hospitals are legally obliged to provide treatment; however, they will invoice you immediately afterwards.

National holiday

29. October - Republic Day.
