In the United States, you will encounter a mix of historic cities, modern innovation hubs, and untouched nature. The cultural diversity, reflected in various cuisines, traditions, and languages, makes every trip a unique experience. Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or urban exploration – the United States has something for everyone.
Entry
Persons travelling to the United States as a holiday guest or transit passenger and staying in the country for no longer than 90 days require a passport valid for at least six months beyond the return date. A visa is not required. An electronic entry permit, called "Electronic System of Travel Authorization" (ESTA), is mandatory. Without this document, you will be denied entry. Apply for the travel authorization online no later than 72 hours before departure. This regulation affects all travelers who can enter the US without a visa. The online confirmation currently costs 21 dollars and is valid for up to 2 years.
Safety
The country is stable. However, caution is advised in the vicinity of demonstrations, as riots are possible. In the past, riots have occasionally resulted in fatalities and injuries. Local protests and violent clashes with security forces can occur in cases of political dissatisfaction or following police actions perceived as disproportionate.
The crime rate is increasing, particularly in large cities. It can vary significantly depending on the location and neighborhood. Snatch-and-pickpocket thefts are especially common in tourist areas and on public transport. Break-ins targeting rental cars also occur regularly.
The possession of firearms and other weapons is widespread. Firearms are frequently used in incidents such as robberies, gang conflicts, or mass shootings. There is also an increase in ideologically motivated attacks involving firearms.

The official language of the United States is English.
Currency and means of payment
The currency in the United States is the dollar (USD). Credit cards are accepted and even appreciated in almost all accommodation, hotels and shops. A credit card is required for many bookings.
Tip
In the United States, tipping is referred to as a "tip." Since service charges are not included in the prices, a tip is expected, and the guidelines listed below should generally not be undercut. Of course, the amount could be reduced if the service was poor. However, not leaving any tip is almost considered an insult.
Restaurant - 15-25% of the bill
Taxi drivers - 15%, 20% if they are helpful and load / unload the luggage
Transport and infrastructure
The road network is well-developed. However, potholes require special attention. In large cities, there is also a risk due to the often-unpredictable behavior of many road users.
In rural areas, there is a risk of serious accidents involving wildlife. Do not underestimate the long distances. If you are stopped by the police, remain seated in your vehicle and keep your hands on the steering wheel until the officers reach you and provide further instructions.
Risk due to nature
Tornadoes can occur throughout the country and year-round. Hurricanes threaten the Gulf of Mexico, Hawaii, and the East Coast from May to November.
In winter, heavy snowstorms (blizzards) can occur, especially in the northern regions.
In the western USA, Alaska, and the state of Hawaii, there are numerous volcanoes. When hiking on volcanoes, great caution is required, and it is essential to be accompanied by an experienced local guide.
Medical care
Medical care is available, but hospital stays are significantly more expensive than in Europe. In emergencies, hospitals also require a financial guarantee (credit card or advance payment) before providing treatment.
Special legal practices
Laws and legal practices can vary significantly between individual states.
It is a criminal offense to leave children under the age of 12 unattended, whether at home, in a hotel, in a car, or elsewhere.
Those who fail to pay traffic fines risk being barred from entry or encountering issues during their next entry—potentially even facing legal proceedings.
Consumption of alcohol is prohibited for individuals under the age of 21. Additionally, alcohol may not be consumed in public or carried visibly.
Offenses against the drug laws are punishable by several years of imprisonment (drug trafficking can result in life sentences), even for small quantities, and may include a travel ban.
In some states, the death penalty is imposed for serious crimes (e.g., murder).
National holiday
On July 4th, the United States celebrates Independence Day, marking the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The 13 colonies, once under British rule, declared their independence because they wanted to govern themselves and live as free citizens in a free country.
After signing the Declaration in Philadelphia, the colonies fought the Revolutionary War against Britain, which ended in 1781 when Britain recognized American independence, leading to the formation of the United States.
For over 200 years, Americans have celebrated this day with speeches, music, parades, and fireworks. In the past, 13 gunshots were fired to honor the original 13 states. Today, Americans decorate with the national flag, wear red, white, and blue, and sing the national anthem.
