Ottawa - the capital city

Published on 3 October 2021 at 08:00

Ottawa, the capital of Canada, is situated on the banks of the Ottawa River in the province of Ontario. As the political and cultural heart of the country, Ottawa blends history with modernity. The city is home to iconic landmarks such as the Parliament Buildings with its famous Peace Tower, world-class museums like the Canadian Museum of History, and a vibrant arts and festival scene. Ottawa is also known for its proximity to nature, including the scenic Rideau Canal, which transforms into the world’s longest skating rink in winter. It’s a city where tradition and innovation seamlessly come together.

Alexandra Bridge

The Royal Alexandra Interprovincial Bridge also know as the Alexandra Bridge or Interprovincial Bridge is a steel truss cantilever bridge spanning the Ottawa River between Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec. The bridge is not only passable by cars, but can also be used by pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge is also one of my tips, because on the one hand it is beautiful and on the other hand I can give you the ultimate secret tip for parking. It's always a bit of a hassle to drive into a city. Park in Gatineau and walk across the bridge to Ottawa.

Major's Hill Park

The park is a calm oasis in downtown Ottawa and the perfect spot to take a break. This park features some of the best lookouts in the City, offering stunning views like on the Rideau Canal, the Ottawa River and the Parliament Buildings. Take a stroll through the park's stately trees, over its rolling lawns and winding pathways and learn about its history trhough a series of interpretation panels.

Parliament Hill

Incredible government buildings you see on this hill.I didn't take too many photos there because they have a big construction site at the moment. But what was interesting was the Centennial Flame. The Centennial Flame is a monument on Parliament Hill commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation.

Since Summer 2021 there where shoes, stuffed animals around the flame. It was one of several memorials with children's toys that appeared across the country after the discovery sparked a national reckoning involving Canada's historic and ongoing treatment of indigenous people.

ByWard Market

When you are in Ottawa, be sure to explore the ByWard Market. The historic market area is full of different treats and highlights!

And my ultimate highlight are the BeaverTails. BeaverTails is a Canadian biscuit chain. It is famous for the BeaverTail. BeaverTails are a deep-fried pastry that looks like a beaver tail. They are a uniquely Canadian pastry, and are also known as the "Canadian donut". And they are incredibly delicious. A must for all visitors to Canada.
