Beyond the capital, the picturesque landscape of Lake Balaton, also known as the "Hungarian Sea," as well as historic cities like Pécs and Eger, invite exploration. Hungarian cuisine, characterized by paprika, goulash, and hearty dishes, is another highlight that captivates visitors.

Entry

You are obliged to be able to always identify yourself with your passport or identity card.

Safety

Travel to Hungary is generally considered safe. However, petty crime is relatively high, especially on public transportation, at train stations, and near tourist attractions. There have been occasional reports of thefts committed by individuals dressed in police uniforms. Official police personnel wear a badge with a five-digit service number and can present an ID card in credit card format. The following precautionary measures are recommended:

Use guarded parking lots.

Car theft attempts often involve staged breakdowns or offers of help, especially at night (e.g., pointing out damage to your vehicle). In such cases, do not get out of the car; instead, drive away.

Exercise caution when meeting strangers in bars and nightclubs and be wary of invitations for drinks from unknown individuals.

Exchange money only at official locations, such as banks and exchange offices.

Tip

In most restaurants and cafés, a tip of 10-15% is automatically added as a service charge, which is itemized separately on the bill – and in many cases on the menu as well. However, it’s worth asking when paying if the service charge is included in the price, because if it’s not, it’s a good idea to leave at least a 10% tip.

Secondary roads are sometimes in poor condition. The unpredictable behavior of many road users requires extra caution.
